The 90% of the ibizan houses have a bee house. They are made of carob tree trunk, fig tree trunk, sabina tree branches… Honey has been the unique sweetener in Ibiza until sugar was cheap enough for population.
It was a basic ingredient in the popular gastronomy of the island as well as valued for medicinal uses.
Honey and bees very often also appear in our popular literature.
There are many bee species and subspecies. Only Ibiza and Formentera have more than 70 species. But the unique specie used in Ibiza for honey production is Apis Mellifera
. This specie is smaller, darker and more furry than the same specie in mainland. Are you ready to meet them?
Ibizan Group is proud to collaborate with l'Associació d'Apicultors d'Eivissa
. They are in love with the landscape and culture of our homeland, and continue producing honey with traditional bee houses, using the same method from Carthaginian until 40 o 50 years ago.
This Association has been Premio Amigo de la Tierra 2003, Premio Savina 2013 and Premio al Mérito Ciudadano de la isla de Ibiza 2015 honoreed.
